Rythym is Our Business

DSC00358.JPGIn Washington, D.C. this weekend, temperatures are to hit the high 90s. The heat index will reportedly be at a staggering 110 degrees. As the weather heats up, take some time cool down with a little Jimmie Lunceford and Deauville cocktail.

Recorded in the 1930s, many of these tunes were spinning during the infamous 1936 North American heat wave. The recordings from this era seem to drip with humidity. The brass feels heavier. The vocals, thready. I've no doubt that the extreme weather patterns of the 1930s (e.g., Dust Bowl) were reflected back by the creeping melodies of the day.

In my humble opinion, this album is the perfect companion to a mystery novel and an air-conditioned afternoon.

From Jimmie Lunceford's "Rhythm is Our Business" LP:

1. Mood Indigo
2. Black and Tan Fantasy
3. Dream of You
4. Rain
5. Since My Best Girl Turned Me Down
6. Rhythm is our Business
7. Sleepy Time Gal

Don't thank me. Thank SOM Records' dollar bin.
